Last week's fluky match against Real Salt Lake, much like the Sounders' last league loss that came against Houston, appears to have been nothing more than an anomaly. After an impressive midweek victory against Herediano that kept the club's group stage record absolutely flawless (their the only club to remain flawless so far in tournament, I might add), the Sounders continue their winning ways in the league with a resounding 3-0 victory against mid-table DC United.
The first half an hour or so saw the Sounders and DC with fairly even possession and yet no clean cut chances on goal. The match burst into life in the thirty fifth minute, through some brilliant play through the middle by Brad Evans and Mauro Rosales that found Mike Fucito clean through on goal, cooly finishing the ball inside the far post past an advancing Joe Willis. Into first half stoppage time, the Sounders doubled their advantage thanks to brilliant build-up play by Rosales and Fredy Montero, finished off by Alvaro Fernandez.
The Sounders quickly picked up where they left, finding a third goal only twelve minutes after the start of the second half. Once again Rosales was involved, lofting an excellent cross to Montero lurking on the far post. Montero initial attempted header was stopped by Willis, but Fernandez was there waiting to eat up and smash home the rebound. Despite United's head coach Ben Olsen clearly throwing in the towel by subbing off both Charlie Davies and Dwayne De Rosario, for the remainder of the half DC United desperately attempted erasing the clean sheet held by Kasey Keller. Despite their efforts, skillful saves by Keller and as always dependable defending left United to depart from Century Link this evening with nothing.
