Red Bulls In Shambles

There was some hope for the New York Red Bulls last week, with their impressive and rather surprising victory over FC Dallas (who seem to be slipping, lately with four points from their last six matches). Unfortunately, the defensive shape that they found last week hasn't seemed to persist past that single match last week. Defensive errors plagued New York in the first half of their home match against the currently hot Real Salt Lake, seeing RSL net three goals by the half hour mark. Centerback Rafa Marquez was so discontent with the performance, he had some choice words for his teammates:

"I’m focusing on really performance at my highest level. That doesn’t mean that the whole backline can perform at that same level, so that’s a problem, I think this is a team game and unfortunately there isn't an equal level between my teammates and I."

Marquez certainly makes himself sound a little full of himself with that statement. With that in mind, Marquez's statement clearly demonstrates just how fractured that the Red Bulls are. There clearly is a lack of team unity, surely meaning the ultimate demise of the Red Bulls. If Hans Backe remains the head coach past this season, I will be incredibly shocked. Not only has he lost his locker room, he has made some terrible decisions in putting all his eggs in the MLS Cup basket by completely disregarding the US Open Cup earlier in the season. From the way things are looking, they have absolutely no chance of making the play-offs, let alone advancing if they did.
